We've taken many, many photos of GERTRUDE, and in each one, she has the same stoic, adorable look, and she sits nicely posing for her photos. Like an aged beauty queen, all that is missing is a token wave of her hand, tossing kisses to her adoring fans. She had a lovely visit to our friends at Rustburg Veterinary Clinic, who are always good about telling it like it is when it comes to dogs and cats from the shelter. Here is the report, in our layman's terms:

First, Gertrud e is ancient. Not just old, but old as the hills!
Second, the only really good thing in her favor is that she is spayed and she is not obese. Now for her old-lady notes: she has some arthritis in her back legs. Her thyroid is basically non-functioning, which has led to horribly flaky skin and hair loss. Additionally, her bloodwork indicates that a "kidney diet" would be beneficial AND because her white count is high, she needs a round of antibiotics. Her weight, 6.7 pounds, is acceptable. And she is heartworm negative. Not bad for a little girl found wandering unkempt and toothless as a stray in Appomattox County.

What we are looking for now for Gertrude is a retirement village, in your home of course, where she be treated with dignity and respect, and not filled to the brim with vaccines and chemicals. If your vet is holistic, and believes in helping the older generation, than this little gal may be a good match. She sleeps a lot! She enjoys mealtime, and loves being in the kitchen while you prepare it. If the meal-fixer doesn't move fast enough, little Miss Gertrude will tell you all about it! She enjoys being held, carried, and even better, being on your lap for long naps. So... who can fulfill this little one's needs? Is it you? If you think so, email us at FOACinfo@gmail.com

Here is our original post!

Gertrude! This 6.7 pound senior chihuahua is spayed, and is probably at least sixteen-plus years. She was found wandering in Appomattox County, and at some point has been well-loved, as she knows all about loving hands, food, and a bath. She spent the day at the vet yesterday having blood drawn, and getting lots of attention from the staff at  Rustburg Veterinary Clinic . The bloodwork will be analyzed and we'll know more about what is going on with the little angel on Thursday . Here's what we do know: GERTRUDE has no teeth, but she does have ongoing problems with chronic infection in a hole in her gums that goes to her airway. She has a continuous "snuffly" sound, due to this problem; she has a grade two heart murmur, which may have been the result of this chronic infection. She also has yeasty skin, resulting in an odor, and requires medicated baths for a while. The good things about her: she is pee pee pad trained and also enjoys a quick trip outside to potty! She likes other dogs just fine, and is currently in a house with German shepherds, plus other smaller dogs including a chihuahua. Her tongue lolls out the side of her mouth, and she is just fine that way. We realize there are very few homes who would be willing to take in a dog with these issues.
