Katie has been waiting for literally months to be able to greet her adoring public and show off her surgery. Yes, Katie, the dog with a nub where there once had been a left rear leg, is now free from the dead weight that held her back from being completely perfect. Now that the leg has been amputated and Katie has been spayed, she can get on with her life as a super dog who can do just about anything.
Katie's history: Three-legged Katie spent two days at the vet office for a full physical assessment, which included x-rays under sedation to determine the extent of her damaged bones, and blood work. Her injuries were consistent with being hit by a car. They included a broken spine and jaw, both fully healed now. The severed leg injury (which is now a stub, with the foot missing below her ankle) looked more recent, but residents who have seen her around the area said she's been three-legged for both her litters. The vet thinks she was more than likely hit by a car at one time.
The fact that Katie has survived, and raised at least two litters of puppies, says a lot about her will to live. And the fact that she is trusting, gentle and appreciative with the family who have taken her into their home as a foster says even more about her personality and willingness to be a companion. She survived by eating garbage, cleaning up neighborhood dogs' food from their bowls, and being resourceful. She is a wonderful dog with a lot of heart and we would love to see her adopted into and understanding and loving home.
ADOPTION GUIDELINES:
Virginia’s Code requires that any unsterilized pets adopted from the Campbell County Animal Shelter may be adopted only to residents of Campbell County, the City of Lynchburg, or counties touching Campbell County. If you are a resident of one of these areas, you may adopt directly from the facility and have the pet spayed/neutered within 30 days, or by the time the pet is six months of age. If you live outside this area, the pet must be spayed or neutered before you can take it home.
Puppies or kittens in care at the shelter too young to be spayed/neutered before adoption may often be adopted through Friends of Campbell County Animal Control. There is an adoption fee required for this process. We ask that you have a veterinarian on record who can verify that your other pets were well-cared for.
Pets identified as being “fostered” are available for a fee. Fees range from $50 to $300. Fostered pets are not at the Campbell County Shelter and the animal wardens may not be familiar with those pets.
An Adoption Application, available at the Campbell County Shelter, or online at our website www.friendsofcampbellcounty.org, is required prior to adoption. Specific questions are most easily answered by email, info@friendsofcampbellcounty.org, or by leaving a voicemail for one of our volunteers at 434-485-6242.
