Petey’s story will tug at your heartstrings, as he has been through so much!  Petey was originally adopted from our shelter when he was a puppy, back in 2014. His adopter told us that at the time, we had warned her that he had baggage, having been mistreated by a man, and that he was unable to forget that part of his life. However, they loved him deeply and worked through the problems he had with males, and showed us that he had learned to accept gentleness and love from all sexes.  Petey was loved by his adoptive family for six years, but when the family relocated to a part of the country where they were not permitted to have a pit bull, they brought him back to our shelter so we could find him another wonderful home, back in October, 2020. Dogs like Petey defy the classic mistaken generalizations the breed often garners, and we were thrilled that a family who spotted him on a rescue site visited the shelter, and fell in love. Fast forward to January 30--the adoptive family took Petey to their family vet for a minor issue with one of his toenails, and were told by the vet that Petey had arthritis in his hips, and also has a significant heart murmur.  They felt they couldn't give Petey what he needed, and brought him immediately back to the County Shelter for rehoming. Petey is such a gentle boy! He loves babies, children of all ages, cats, and other dogs.  He adores women and is most comfortable with women, but accepts males as well, when he is given a bit of space. He is beautifully housetrained—and what wonderful manners he has! He walks beautifully on a leash, and as far as training, he does a beautiful sit, down, gives paw, gives other paw, and is just all in all a perfect dog. He is neutered, current with his vaccines, microchipped, and appreciates  love.  Of course, more than anything else, Petey will appreciate a home where he can get over his sense of loss, and be given time to adjust to a new routine. Can you give him that, despite his medical needs? We don't expect miraculous cures from our adopters--we want people to love our dogs and cats, and do the best they can for them. Petey is currently in a foster home with cats, two small dogs, a teen boy, and a sweet working-from-home mom!   Apply to adopt here: friendsofcampbellcounty.org, under the animals heading. #lovemesomepetey  #shelterpets #savealife
